Angelus Bordeaux

Last spring, I was invited to a dream trip to wine lovers – a tour of several major wine regions to taste barrel last vintage. The French believe the 2005 vintage may be the best in 40 years. As happens now for the year 2006 (and is a annual event), I thought that this experience should be shared.

Our first visit was to the Rhone Valley. Northern Rhone is mountainous and has steep vineyards. The main grape is Syrah red, with bold, spicy and peppery. We visited Domaine Vernay and were treated to outstanding 2003 – 2005 vintages of Syrah. We had extensive conversations about the proper height of rooted plants, techniques to force the roots to grow deep into the ground, the sheet drain, tying new growth and use of organic fertilizers. Winegrowing, after all, is agriculture.

Next we went to the region of Chateauneuf-du-Pape in the southern Rhone. We visited Chateau Domaine Berthert-Nayme, where the vineyards are literally covered with round, lime baseball businesses in the vicinity of the river Rhone. The friendly Chateau owners generously treated us to a sumptuous dinner. To make their hospitality, last October, the same owners Chateau were the United States for a wine tour and we were glad to receive from us. That evening, we enjoyed a kitchen and a selection of local and California wines.

Westwards towards Bordeaux, we went to the Cahors region and visited the Clos Triguedina cellar, where wines have been used by President Chirac for state dinners. They make a beautiful red with 100 percent malbec grapes called Prince Probus, an elegant white dessert wine and specialty wine using the old method of drying wine grapes in an oven before the fermentation process. This darkens the color, concentrated aromas and aptly named Black Wine.

For our second week we went Bordeaux, divided by the River Gironde in two major wine regions. The left bank includes the regions of Medoc and Graves with Cabernet Sauvignon. Shore right is mainly the region of Saint-Emilion, which focuses on merlot.

We started our journey from Bordeaux to Saint-Emilion at Chateau Cantenac. Other wineries in the area visited included Chateaux Ausone, Cheval Blanc and Angelus. Among these, I was struck by the elegance Pure and silky texture of Cheval Blanc and layers of black fruit in the wine Chateau Angelus. These are two of my favorites.

To give us an overview of the vintage 2005 Bordeaux, we visited several major wine wholesalers. As some tasting rooms of the samples has literally hundreds of castles (cellars) I asked the staff to please show me the top 20 in the room to reduce the field. You had to constantly use spit buckets to survive. In general, the 2005 vintage is big, tannic and has layers of fruit. It should prove to be a great vintage.

We started our tour in the left bank Medoc region north and worked our way south. The designations, we covered included Saint-Estephe, Pauillac, St. Julien, Margaux, Graves, Pessac-Leognan and Sauternes. We visited four to eight wineries a day. Probably more impressive today including Chateau Latour, Lafite-Rothschild, Haut-Brion and Chateau d'Yquem. Undoubtedly, these are some of the best wines I ever tasted.

The castles themselves were beautiful and some are virtual works of art. I can better appreciate the pride the French feel in respect of their wine industry, with its rich history and tradition. I was really gun over to France by their architecture, culture, cuisine, warm welcome and the year 2005. Wonderful!

As this trip provided wines from Rhone, dessert wines and Bordeauxs, their diversity does not of specific pairings or specific recommendations this month.

Please visit your local wine merchant and ask them recommendations. The 2005 vintage is probably not yet available, but the vintages 2000 and 2003 were excellent. The only year in which the average or below average the year 2002.

Uncorking Another Sideways

Bottle Shock is a temporary condition of wine characterized by muted or fruit flavors usually caused disjoint by wines that have been shaken in travel.

Bottle Shock is a look at the film entertaining, but not all facts about the events leading to the famous 1976 "Judgement of Paris". In this competition, Californian wines beat their French counterparts in a blind tasting, put California wines firmly on the wine list. It's a good romp in the vineyard and shows us what the Napa of old was like and how things have changed since.

At that time, I traveled through Napa, as part of a college program of wine. I found it difficult to understand why this event would change the California wine industry. Large areas of Inglenook, Beringer, Freemark Abbey, and Krug has shared the stage with new names of Grgich, Stags Leap, Mondavi and Sterling and producing world class wines were. Did not the Europeans know that? Well, a trip to Europe A few years later showed that the wines he has done through the "pool" are not names have been mentioned above, but the wine jug vineyards of Modesto, Bakersfield and Fresno. Good marketing has trumped good wine.

Back to the film … The story alternates between Napa Valley and Paris, follows Jim Barrett (played a bit stiffly by Bill Pullman) a lawyer who has pursued his dream by ditching the suits and the purchase of a winery (Chateau Montelena). His goal was nothing more to do in the larger world Chardonnay. Like many a winemaker, then as now, his company is struggling and is applying for his third bank loan.

In Paris, Steven Spurrier (played wonderfully by Alan Rickman) is a wine merchant pedant British wine merchant with a difficulty. It was Spurrier who comes with the great idea of staging a blind tasting between French and California wines. Rickman is about 28 years older than Spurrier was at the time and plays the Brit as a classic wine snob. Once Spurrier arrives in Napa the juxtaposition him in the context of rural Napa is often hilarious.

(Spurrier has denounced the film for many falsehoods and embellishments and approves all a different version of George Taber who witnessed the actual tasting. The new film "Judgement of Paris" is later this year. Other in the industry have questioned why Mike Grgich, who actually made the wine for Chateau Montelena winner, did not get a mention in the film. And why not Stag's Leap a more prominent place for the best red wine.)

Both Bo and Jim Barrett, and many other old hands in the valley, has contributed with the history written by Jody Savin, Ross Schwartz and Director Randy Miller. Hollywood writers can sometimes improve a story or ruin it Depending on your tastes and proximity to real events. This film is certainly entertaining and worth seeing. For a more factual account check on the work George Taber, Judgement of Paris: California against France and the Historic 1976 Paris Tasting that revolutionized wine, or wait for the new film.

In Bottle Shock, Bo (Chris Pine), the owner's son hippie cellar has ambitions for a while. Brambia Gustavo (Freddy Rodriguez), the most serious and skilled "cellar rat" has visions of becoming a great winemaker. Sam (Rachael Taylor), the love interest is a fiction, but opens a window into the development of the animal Bo losing party to the promoter cellar. The film follows Spurrier, alternating and somewhat awkwardly, as he makes his way to through Napa Valley tasting, swirling, spitting and recognizing the quality of California wine and Jim and Bo Barrett sparring (literally) that the father and son with the work ethic and different objectives.

The film is shot with sweeping views of the wine country that remind us of the beauty Napa Valley is. Many scenes are shot in the vineyard with the actors poking out the vines very carefully. (The ripe fruit of the vine appears have been shortly before harvest and probably the vineyard manager had asked the crew not to touch anything!) Does the film bring to Napa a new onslaught of tourists Chardonnay research? I doubt it. Chardonnay Napa and do not really need much promotion and the film is good, not great. Now, if a Alicante Bouché from Lodi won the Paris tasting … that would be news!

The cellar scenes are a bit staged, but the film works and the story is true enough to be important and pleasant enough to be entertaining. The story ends as wine finds its way to the tasting in Paris – and the rest, as they say, is history. The film has a great 70, the soundtrack dominated era, with many Doobie Brothers. also stars Dennis Farina and Elia Dishku.

As an ironic footnote to the end of July this year Bo and Jim Barrett announced Chateau Montelena that will be sold, pending government approval, to Michel Reybier, owner of Chateau Cos d'Estournel Bordeaux, producer next to famous French Chateau Lafite Rothschild.

Chianti Bordeaux

We examined many Italian wines Chianti and at least two, a march of about $ 20 and another at half price. As you may know, Chianti has evolved over the years and what was once considered a simple table wine designation now part of Italy's top wine with both greater and lesser wines. This Chianti has broken with tradition, it is made from organic grapes and is aged in barrels. In addition, it is certified organic by ICEA the Italian agency, Instituto Certificazione Etica e Ambientale (Institute for Ethics and environmental certification).

The Castellaccia the producer is located in Tuscany halfway between Florence and Siena. They use organic fertilizers and the grapes are hand picked. You can read their site for more information on their production process. Interestingly, these individuals are also at stud a horse breed that originated in Turkmenistan.

OUR POLICY REVIEW OF WINE

All wines that we taste and review are on sale at retail.

Wine Reviewed

The 2007 Chianti Colli Senesi Castellaccia alcohol of 13.7% on $ 15.50

Let's begin by quoting the marketing materials.

Description: Our Quality Assurance laboratory has determined that this wine contains 25 mg / L of free sulfur. Tasting Notes: Generous and finely using traditional grape of Chianti Sangiovese and Canaiolo Ciliegiolo, hills of Siena, the Chianti breaks with tradition by using no aging in oak. There are Intense aromas of blackberry, blueberry and spice. Dry, excellent fruit core with an equally impressive freshness to balance. Full-bodied with a long fruity finish. Almost New World in style. Enjoy with spaghetti and meatballs. (VINTAGES panel, Nov. 2008) And now for my review.

The first sip revealed a few fruits. It does not appear to be tannin. The food included an initial pairing overcooked commercial Grilled chicken breast, tomato salsa and garlic, and potatoes roasted in chicken fat. In the presence of meat wine was a bit thin, but spicy. Fruit salad with wine began to emerge. In the presence of potatoes acidity of wine had a tinge of severity, but I the taste of black cherries.

The second match involved beef ribs cooked with sliced potatoes. Chianti was hard and not at all round. There was a little tobacco, but the aftertaste. I stirred the wine vigorously to get rid of the aftertaste, but then Chianti has become thin. When I added a little meat sauce jalapeno wine actually improved, showing more fruit.

The last meal kube centered around a specialty in the Middle East, also called kibbeh, ground beef in jackets bulghar crushed with a broth containing acid Swiss chard. I tasted a little tobacco and wine is quite round, but thin.

Perhaps the best part was the cheese pairings. A wine tasting with a yellow cheddar, Chianti is round and fruity. The tannins are not present. With Emmentaler Swiss wine picked up a little.

final verdict. I would not buy this wine again. Except for cheese pairings have not been up to. Chianti market was better, regardless price. Maybe I miss the oak.

Top 5 wines for the summer by leading wine supplier Philippines relesed YATS Wine Cellars

Summer is not only heat and cold when it comes to wine selection. It also has much to do with the kind of cooking that uses ingredients that come into season between February and June of each year. Now serving in all fine restaurants in the Philippines are lobsters, oysters, mackerel and barracuda. Some of these calls for a crisp racy dry white wine, then topped the list of YATS Wine Cellars for a wine of this summer 2000 Chablis Lamblin et Fils.

Great contender for the first place especially for those who have a weakness for Bubblies, is this crowd-like, one second of the Rose Loire Valley. Creamy, sweet, easy go down and absolutely delicious to drink alone or for a variety of summer food including seafood is not only, but also white meats and cold meats with salads.

White wine and sparkling wine does not meet wine lovers all summer. Red to come into the equation too. Fortunately for Manila and Clark wine lovers, the fabulous – perfect even – vintage 2005 is slowly coming into drinking status. Recommended for fun this summer in the Philippines is the wine red 2005 Cotes de Castillon, Bordeaux region right near the Bank of Saint-Emilion and Pomerol. The Castle is Hyota a rich, sweet and well balanced red that give pleasure for 10-15 years or more. Red meat, full air and even grill a good wine with dinner the evening summer.

Taking the afternoon off to read a book in the shade an acacia tree in Clark Philippines, next to a lake perhaps? Sauvignon Blanc is unbeatable when it comes to this kind of parameters. This Sauvignon Blanc Wine Cellars YATS from Argentina, which gives New Zealand a run for its money. Argentina as we all know, is famous for its Malbec, but this is not a One-Trick-Pony. Sauvignon Blanc grown in high altitude vineyards near the ocean seems to have the same appeal. In this cellar, we bring pork and veal in the summer menu.

Then last, but certainly not least, is the addition of choice to the list of summer wines – a pinot noir, what else. The Cono Sur Pinot Black weighs like the best value for money of all the wines selected for this summer YATS Wine Cellars. It is a versatile wine that not only brings light gamey red meat in the picture but also fish such as salmon or fish with tomato-based sauce.

YATS Wine Cellars began in Clark Freeport, Pampanga, a mere 90 minute drive along the highway north of Manila. First class wines can be found in the cellars of fine dining Restaurant and Wine works YATS Lounge located inside Mimosa Leisure Estate Clark, just before the Casino. Clark YATS Wine Center – a separate building of two floors located on the main road in Clark Freeport.

Public tastings are held from time to time and sometimes in Clark, Manila. Ticket prices range from P1500 to p500 for these theme nights are managed by professionals, not wine merchants sponsorship, pushy salesmen or banners sticking to ruin the evening. Each ticket contains a the number of beads that can be exchanged for a tasting of a wine to pay between those with a lineup that often includes wines that are quite old and expensive. This makes wine tasting events YATS the most profitable place to explore new options and expand our knowledge of wine through meetings firsthand.

Wine Seminars were conducted in the past and may be offered from time to time. These seminars with intermediate to advanced topics that are intended to provide useful and practical knowledge for wine enthusiasts. Topics are targeted treatment depth. Most seminars include a tasting tour after the conference.

And wine dinners are held either YATS Restaurants Clark or in collaboration with other restaurants and organizers. private wine dinners can also be arranged for groups of 14 or more. Even Asian food can be part of a dinner YATS wines.

Sangiovese grapes Italys

Italian immigrants from Tuscany Sangiovese grapes probably introduced in California in the late 1800s, perhaps the family Segheshio of "Chianti Station" near Geyserville. It is a component variety of the field mixing in many former North Coast vineyards and Gold countries that are often otherwise identified as Zinfandel.

Sanguis Jovis, the Latin origin of the varietal name, literally means "blood Jupiter "and it is likely that Sangiovese (aka Sangioveto or San Gioveto) was known by Etruscan winemakers, although the first literary reference it was in 1722. It is probably indigenous to Tuscany, the most famous wine is Chianti.

The basic mixture was Chianti created by Baron Ricasoli in the 1890s. This represents an average of 70% Sangiovese grapes from the base (with canaiolo 15% [red], and 15% Trebbiano [Blank] and sometimes a little] Colorino [red). Many vineyards are traditionally planted with the mixture of varieties. It is difficult even for Italians follow their own evolving and highly detailed wine laws, which specify permitted grape varieties, maximum yields per acre, minimum alcohol content, minimum standards of aging before the sale, etc. Currently, the minimum allowed sangiovese in Chianti is 90%. other Varieties that can be used now include Malvasia toscana, a white grape far superior to the ubiquitous Trebbiano. However, the total grapes White used shall not exceed 5% of the mixture.

Somehow Chianti is Sangiovese Cabernet Sauvignon as it is in Bordeaux. Both form the basis of wines normally blended with other varietals and both by themselves share a certain distinctive elegance and complexity, when well done.

There are at least 14 distinct clones of sangiovese. At one point, there were some attempts in Italy to identify two "families" Grosso and Piccolo, although this seems to have a more commercial basis ("mines better than yours") that ampelographic or taste of evidence to justify This attempt at classification.

The fruits are slow to mature and late maturity. With relatively thin skins, it tends to rot in the humidity and does not mature well if planted above an elevation of 1,500 feet. Sangiovese vineyards with limestone soil seem to produce wines with aromas energetic.

More shots of the many wines from France

Perfect pairs

April 12, 2007 – as published in the Naperville Sun and Beacon News

By Bill Garlough

Last spring, I was invited to a dream trip to wine lovers – a tour several major wine regions to taste the latest vintage barrel. The French believe the 2005 vintage may be the best in 40 years. As happens now for the year 2006 (and is an annual event), I thought that this experience should be shared.

Our first visit was the Rhone Valley. Northern Rhone is mountainous and has steep vineyards. The primary red grape is Syrah, with bold, spicy notes and pepper. We visited Domaine Vernay and were treated during 2003 – 2005 vintages of Syrah. We have had discussions in depth on the height good rootstock, the technical force the roots to grow deep into the ground, bleeding leaves, tying the new shoots and the use of fertilizers organic. Winegrowing, after all, is agriculture.

Next we visited the region of Chateauneuf-du-Pape in the southern Rhone. We visited Chateau Domaine Berthert-Nayme, where the vineyards are literally covered with round, lime baseball businesses in the vicinity of the Rhone. Owners Castle has generously treated to a sumptuous dinner. To share their hospitality, last October, the same Chateau owners were United States for a wine tour and we were glad to receive from us. That evening, we enjoyed a kitchen and a selection wines from California and local.

To the west toward Bordeaux, we traveled in the region of Cahors and visited the winery Clos Triguedina which wines were used by President Chirac for state dinners. They are a beautiful red with 100 percent malbec grapes called Prince Probus a dessert wine elegant white wines and specialty using the old method of drying wine grapes in an oven before the process fermentation. This darkens the color, concentrated aromas and aptly named Black Wine.

For our second week we went to Bordeaux divided by the Gironde River in two major wine regions. The left bank includes the Medoc and Graves regions with Cabernet Sauvignon. The right bank is mainly the Saint-Emilion, which focuses on merlot.

We began our visit to Saint-Emilion Bordeaux Chateau Cantenac. Other wineries Local tour included Castles Ausone Cheval Blanc and Angelus. Among these, I was struck by the sheer elegance and silky texture of the Horse White and layers of black fruit in the wine Chateau Angelus. These are two of my favorites.

To give us an overview of the 2005 vintage of Bordeaux, we have visited many wine wholesalers leading. As some tasting rooms of samples has literally hundreds of chateaux (wineries), I asked staff to please show me the top 20 in the room to reduce the field. He had to constantly use spit buckets to survive. In general The 2005 vintage is big, tannic and has layers of fruit. It should be a great year.

We started our tour left bank of the Medoc region north and worked our way south. The designations, we covered included Saint-Estephe, Pauillac, St. Julien, Margaux, Graves, Pessac-Leognan and Sauternes. We visited four to eight wineries a day. Probably more impressive today included Chateaux Latour, Lafite-Rothschild, Haut-Brion and Chateau d'Yquem. Undoubtedly, these are some of the best wines I ever tasted.

The castles themselves were beautiful and some were works of virtual art. I can better appreciate the feeling of pride the French feel for their industry wine, with its rich history and tradition. I was really gun over to France by their architecture, culture, cuisine, warm hospitality and the year 2005. Wonderful!

As the trip covered wines ranging from sweet wines of the Rhone, and Bordeauxs, their diversity does not put specific recommendations or specific month.

Please visit your local wine merchant and ask for their recommendations. The 2005 vintage is probably not yet available, but the 2000 and 2003 vintages have been excellent. The only vintage that is average / below average 2002 vintage.
