Last spring, I was invited to a dream trip to wine lovers – a tour of several major wine regions to taste barrel last vintage. The French believe the 2005 vintage may be the best in 40 years. As happens now for the year 2006 (and is a annual event), I thought that this experience should be shared.
Our first visit was to the Rhone Valley. Northern Rhone is mountainous and has steep vineyards. The main grape is Syrah red, with bold, spicy and peppery. We visited Domaine Vernay and were treated to outstanding 2003 – 2005 vintages of Syrah. We had extensive conversations about the proper height of rooted plants, techniques to force the roots to grow deep into the ground, the sheet drain, tying new growth and use of organic fertilizers. Winegrowing, after all, is agriculture.
Next we went to the region of Chateauneuf-du-Pape in the southern Rhone. We visited Chateau Domaine Berthert-Nayme, where the vineyards are literally covered with round, lime baseball businesses in the vicinity of the river Rhone. The friendly Chateau owners generously treated us to a sumptuous dinner. To make their hospitality, last October, the same owners Chateau were the United States for a wine tour and we were glad to receive from us. That evening, we enjoyed a kitchen and a selection of local and California wines.
Westwards towards Bordeaux, we went to the Cahors region and visited the Clos Triguedina cellar, where wines have been used by President Chirac for state dinners. They make a beautiful red with 100 percent malbec grapes called Prince Probus, an elegant white dessert wine and specialty wine using the old method of drying wine grapes in an oven before the fermentation process. This darkens the color, concentrated aromas and aptly named Black Wine.
For our second week we went Bordeaux, divided by the River Gironde in two major wine regions. The left bank includes the regions of Medoc and Graves with Cabernet Sauvignon. Shore right is mainly the region of Saint-Emilion, which focuses on merlot.
We started our journey from Bordeaux to Saint-Emilion at Chateau Cantenac. Other wineries in the area visited included Chateaux Ausone, Cheval Blanc and Angelus. Among these, I was struck by the elegance Pure and silky texture of Cheval Blanc and layers of black fruit in the wine Chateau Angelus. These are two of my favorites.
To give us an overview of the vintage 2005 Bordeaux, we visited several major wine wholesalers. As some tasting rooms of the samples has literally hundreds of castles (cellars) I asked the staff to please show me the top 20 in the room to reduce the field. You had to constantly use spit buckets to survive. In general, the 2005 vintage is big, tannic and has layers of fruit. It should prove to be a great vintage.
We started our tour in the left bank Medoc region north and worked our way south. The designations, we covered included Saint-Estephe, Pauillac, St. Julien, Margaux, Graves, Pessac-Leognan and Sauternes. We visited four to eight wineries a day. Probably more impressive today including Chateau Latour, Lafite-Rothschild, Haut-Brion and Chateau d'Yquem. Undoubtedly, these are some of the best wines I ever tasted.
The castles themselves were beautiful and some are virtual works of art. I can better appreciate the pride the French feel in respect of their wine industry, with its rich history and tradition. I was really gun over to France by their architecture, culture, cuisine, warm welcome and the year 2005. Wonderful!
As this trip provided wines from Rhone, dessert wines and Bordeauxs, their diversity does not of specific pairings or specific recommendations this month.
Please visit your local wine merchant and ask them recommendations. The 2005 vintage is probably not yet available, but the vintages 2000 and 2003 were excellent. The only year in which the average or below average the year 2002.

Chateau de Chenonceau
The Chateau des Dames built on a bridge over the Cher is one of the most beautiful castles of the Loire with elegant turrets, arches and stately avenues bordered by plane trees. It touches of romanticism is compounded by the fact that its symmetrical structure stylized and is reflected in the waters of Cher.
Chenonceau owes much of its design and beauty to four women in particular. Catherine of Briconnet who started the trend and was largely responsible for its renaissance at the beginning. Catherine then passed the baton to Diane de Poitiers (mistress Henri II) who was responsible for the formal gardens to the left of the castle as you approach. Unfortunately Diane de Poitiers was forced to relinquish ownership of Chenonceau to Catherine de Medici (the embittered wife of Henri II) who offered Chateau de Chaumont in exchange. Not exactly a fair exchange! Later, the castle was inherited by Louise de Lorraine, the woman in mourning for his favorite son, Henry III Catherine. Louise painted the ceiling of the room in black and white of respect for her deceased husband.
Madame Dupin also had a central role in the development Chenonceau in the 18th century and was responsible for encouraging literary events to be held here. In 1560, the castle became the property Catherine de Medici who entertained numerous astrologers there, including Nostradamus. On the death of her husband, King Henry II, Catherine used her power to take over the coveted Chateau de Chenonceau from her husband's mistress, Diane de Poitiers. As some legal aspects had to be met, Diane was forced to accept the castle of Chaumont, in payment for her beloved Chenonceau. Diane de Poitiers lived at Chaumont for only a short period when the castle sold.
The castle holds an International Garden Festival, which covers a different theme each year from April to October.
Chateau de Chambord

Villandry Chateau de la Loire Superb – A Must See Garden
The gardens at Chateau de Villandry is a true delight. They are tended with love and enthusiasm by Henri Carvallo, curator of the castle and great grand-son of Dr Joachim Carvallo who purchased the castle in 1906. When Dr. Carvallo purchased the property he was about to be demolished. He had been disfigured by the wall arches, fake windows and additions and the gap had been filled in.
Dr. Joachim Carvallo proposed architecture of the Renaissance and harmonious design of origin. He gave up a career impressive in science under the tutelage of a professor who later went on to win the Nobel Peace Prize and is dedicated to restoring Vchateau Villandry and its beautiful gardens.
Later, Dr. Carvallo founded the Association of Historical Mansion in order to save historic buildings throughout the France. You saved Villandry, which is now one of the most visited castles of the Loire Valley.
Carvallo a better job was the restoration of the gardens, which are still Fame Villandry. Gardens existed since the 16th century and were rebuilt under the instructions Carvallo following proof of prints found in "The Most Excellent Bastiments of France" (1576-1579) Androuet by Jacques Du Hoop.
Gardens Chateau de Villandry in the most magnificent examples of Renaissance gardens in France. The gardens are terraced on three levels, have been influenced by Italian gardeners led by Charles VIII. The plantation design at each level are as follows:
The first level is the highest, equal or above ground level with the castle, the Water Garden, The (water garden) with lawns, fountains whose edges are defined by arbors.
The second level consists of: The Ornamental Garden, (Garden of approval), composed of the Garden of the music, the garden of love decoration Flower Garden and Garden of Earthly Delights simple. In front of this level where the castle stands is a bed planted with a pergola shaded by vines on foot.
The third and lowest level is the vegetable garden The garden, (garden), consists of vegetable crops, fruit trees and shrubs, and herbs for seasoning or medicinal purposes. This garden, in the style of Louis XIV, and takes the form of a rectangle of slightly irregular shape around three sides of the top two levels of gardens. It is devoted to vegetables and has 9 square sections divided into beds of various colored plants, surrounded by perennials and hedges of boxwood.
Villandry is a vegetal feast, with large purple cabbage, leeks crazy zigzags of growth, blocks Pumpkin autumn, beds of yellow and green peppers and mounds of celery all replanted twice a year with a brilliant eye for the colors of the seasons.
On the other side of the palace garden, there is a maze of 12000 Beech cut.
All these elements are impressive in their gardens are own rights, so I do not recommend one over the other.
Villandry is well worth the visit. Without much pomp and ceremony, you can witness a castle living in harmony with nature, and the remarkable beauty of these gardens. Eight of the work of gardeners at the Chateau de Villandry full-time and 45,000 plant and 60,000 plants in his vegetable garden every year.
In July of each year of Chateau Villandry has Thousand Nights of Lights, when they light magic castle gardens of Villandry to 2000 candles.
