Airsoft FAQ: What is Hop Up?

Most players understand serious airsoft hop and have formed their opinion about its usefulness, but not all the players have grasped the concept. Today's installment of our new "Frequently Asked Questions Airsoft" series focuses only on this – Which is hop up?

A hop up system in a airsoft gun is designed to increase the distance traveled and vertical accuracy of a pellet fired by an airsoft gun by adjusting its trajectory. Many airsoft players enjoy the ability to hit a target over long distances than would be possible without a Hop Up system.

In other words, a Hop Up places backspin on a BB, which moves in the barrel to adjust the path it followed when it came out of the barrel. A small ledge at the top of the key barrel BB when it passes creating a controlled backspin. Backspin BB gives the lift, allowing it to counteract the effects of gravity for a longer period of time. This allows the BB to move along a trajectory level, increase the distance it can travel. Overall precision, vertical but not horizontal should be improved with the use of hops precisely adjusted upward. Of course, in reality, many factors come into play in terms of accuracy, including wind and skill of the player.

Adjustable hop up allows the user control the amount of backspin that is placed on a BB, but it is important to note that only those experienced with hop ups should try to work with her. Usually hop up is adjusted by turning a wheel that moves the knot projection up or down to put more backspin on the BB or less. Hop is a progressive, and adjusting it all the way from one side or the other may cause jamming and internal damage to the weapon inadvertently. This is because the projection room can change the shape of the exit path BB too. If you are not experienced with this type of system, you do not want to take risk by experimenting with your weapons.
