More shots of the many wines from France
Perfect pairs
April 12, 2007 – as published in the Naperville Sun and Beacon News
By Bill Garlough
Last spring, I was invited to a dream trip to wine lovers – a tour several major wine regions to taste the latest vintage barrel. The French believe the 2005 vintage may be the best in 40 years. As happens now for the year 2006 (and is an annual event), I thought that this experience should be shared.
Our first visit was the Rhone Valley. Northern Rhone is mountainous and has steep vineyards. The primary red grape is Syrah, with bold, spicy notes and pepper. We visited Domaine Vernay and were treated during 2003 – 2005 vintages of Syrah. We have had discussions in depth on the height good rootstock, the technical force the roots to grow deep into the ground, bleeding leaves, tying the new shoots and the use of fertilizers organic. Winegrowing, after all, is agriculture.
Next we visited the region of Chateauneuf-du-Pape in the southern Rhone. We visited Chateau Domaine Berthert-Nayme, where the vineyards are literally covered with round, lime baseball businesses in the vicinity of the Rhone. Owners Castle has generously treated to a sumptuous dinner. To share their hospitality, last October, the same Chateau owners were United States for a wine tour and we were glad to receive from us. That evening, we enjoyed a kitchen and a selection wines from California and local.
To the west toward Bordeaux, we traveled in the region of Cahors and visited the winery Clos Triguedina which wines were used by President Chirac for state dinners. They are a beautiful red with 100 percent malbec grapes called Prince Probus a dessert wine elegant white wines and specialty using the old method of drying wine grapes in an oven before the process fermentation. This darkens the color, concentrated aromas and aptly named Black Wine.
For our second week we went to Bordeaux divided by the Gironde River in two major wine regions. The left bank includes the Medoc and Graves regions with Cabernet Sauvignon. The right bank is mainly the Saint-Emilion, which focuses on merlot.
We began our visit to Saint-Emilion Bordeaux Chateau Cantenac. Other wineries Local tour included Castles Ausone Cheval Blanc and Angelus. Among these, I was struck by the sheer elegance and silky texture of the Horse White and layers of black fruit in the wine Chateau Angelus. These are two of my favorites.
To give us an overview of the 2005 vintage of Bordeaux, we have visited many wine wholesalers leading. As some tasting rooms of samples has literally hundreds of chateaux (wineries), I asked staff to please show me the top 20 in the room to reduce the field. He had to constantly use spit buckets to survive. In general The 2005 vintage is big, tannic and has layers of fruit. It should be a great year.
We started our tour left bank of the Medoc region north and worked our way south. The designations, we covered included Saint-Estephe, Pauillac, St. Julien, Margaux, Graves, Pessac-Leognan and Sauternes. We visited four to eight wineries a day. Probably more impressive today included Chateaux Latour, Lafite-Rothschild, Haut-Brion and Chateau d'Yquem. Undoubtedly, these are some of the best wines I ever tasted.
The castles themselves were beautiful and some were works of virtual art. I can better appreciate the feeling of pride the French feel for their industry wine, with its rich history and tradition. I was really gun over to France by their architecture, culture, cuisine, warm hospitality and the year 2005. Wonderful!
As the trip covered wines ranging from sweet wines of the Rhone, and Bordeauxs, their diversity does not put specific recommendations or specific month.
Please visit your local wine merchant and ask for their recommendations. The 2005 vintage is probably not yet available, but the 2000 and 2003 vintages have been excellent. The only vintage that is average / below average 2002 vintage.

Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion is a wine from Bordeaux in Pessac-Leognan, Grand Cru classified in the classification of Graves in 1953. The area, located near the city of Bordeaux is the wine region of Graves, in the commune of Pessac additional items in Talence.
The castle also produces a second wine from young vines, La Chapelle de La Mission, since the year 1991. [1]
In the early 16th century, the land belonged to the family of Rostaing, home of M. de la Tour d'Esquivens, then called Arrejedhuys, planted with vines before it is transmitted Family Lestonnac in 1540 [2]. It remained under family ownership until 1654 when it was desired by Madame de Lestonnac for Vincentians Fathers, the priests of the Mission of St. Vincent de Paul. [3] The priests cultivated grapes for nearly 130 years until the French Revolution, leaving behind monastic foundations which have been expropriated by the state. [4] It was acquired by Martial Victor Vaillant in November 1792 for 302,000 pounds, and nearly a hundred years it was owned by the family Chiapella. [2] [3]
In 1919 it was sold by Frederick Victor Cousteau Otto Woltner. [2] [3] Woltner son, Ferdinand and Henry, regarded as innovative viticulture, the restructuring of vineyards to produce better grapes. Henry Woltner which became manager of the estate in 1921, in addition to being credited as the pioneer of the use of glass lined tanks in the winemaking process in 1926 [3], came to be known as a genius "wine maker" [5].
For many years considered the chief challenger to his story more important close neighbor Chateau Haut-Brion, La Mission Haut-Brion wines sold at high prices, but it was considered justified because they "produced remarkable bottle". [4] The prolific Woltners ran operations at the nearby Chateau La Tour Haut-Brion for the widow Marie Coustau since the death of her husband in 1923 until his death in 1933 to leave the castle to the family Woltner In his will, and in 1931 was the Woltners acquired the nearby Chateau Laville Haut-Brion that they produce a dry white wine considered one of the best Graves [5].
After Woltner death of Henry in 1974 and his brother shortly after the estate was run by Frances and Francis Woltner Dewavrin, daughter and son-Fernand Woltner. [3] While the standards have been maintained, family discord has led to the sale of the estate with La Tour Haut-Brion and Laville Haut-Brion in 1983 [1], [3] the Domaine Clarence Dillon, owner of Chateau Haut-Brion since 1935 [6] while Dewavrin spent running in the castle Woltner Howell Mountain AVA. [7] Although the historical competition between Haut-Brion and La Mission has been absent in recent years, thanks to the supervision of Jean-Bernard Delmas Dillon Vineyard local original estate was allowed, and the Mission has remained distinctive [1].
American wine critic Robert Parker presented the Parker hundred points up for the 2006 La Mission Haut Brion, [8] making it six times Parker has given the cellar of this partition. [9 Jancis] Robinson, The Mission describes MW as "insider wine par excellence" [1], while David Pepper, MW holds a consistent performance of the estate during the century latter as a justification for classifying the Mission as Premier Cru, as has been done for Château Mouton Rothschild in 1973. [3], [10]
In March 2010, it was announced that the wine of Chateau Laville Haut-Brion cease to be bottled under the label, and instead produced under the name Castle La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc, starting with the 2009 vintage.
