September Sycamores Ranch offers farm stay
The drive up and down California's San Joaquin Valley may be tedious, but consider a halt way to Visalia. September Sycamores Ranch offers a sort of bed-and-breakfast experience on a real farm.
Agri-tourism is what they call – the mix tourism with agricultural land in California and vast orchards offer townspeople point of view about how an orange, for example, gets the shaft your dining table. Thanks to its location just outside of Visalia, Seven Sycamores is in a good place to break the long journey between Northern cities and Southern California.
Bob McKellar is the host of Seven sycamores and something visionary in the field of agro-tourism. A few years back when he was just 75 years, McKellar decided it was time to find ways to market some of his crop orange outside the packing shed usual channels that tend to eat the profits of a producer. He joined an organization National and found that in some places, farmers had begun to "CSA – community supported agriculture programs – which touch on some intermediate and fruits right to consumers. Today, McKellar sells much of its harvest by hundreds of packaging fruit baskets delivered regularly to local customers.
Then McKellar recalls the producers in other parts of the country hosting weddings on their property and, in its first year, 30 weddings booked on its picturesque grounds.
The piece de resistance is that McKellar now offers visitors overnight in an authentic farm – a sort of bed and breakfast, except that McKellar experience life on the road and not not in the house, and breakfast is as fresh as customers cook for themselves. If the farm of three rooms is too large, you can opt for a economy dormitory nearby businesses. Both come with hens and chickens roaming the grounds, and the roosters that offer guests Wake no additional cost.
McKellar mother lived in the house for many decades until 2002 when she died. There are family photos still in the house, which makes him feel like a home, not a vacation rental. McKellar family and neighbors took turns alternately watch two hours for two full years.
If this is not enough for you, consider that McKellar is also his hat guide and personally escort guests around its 200 acres of orange trees where visitors can learn the differences between the navel and Valencia oranges, the best way of planting, watering, harvesting them and darn near enough information that customers could start growing on the oranges themselves.
Still not content, McKellar began hosting what he calls a Spring Farm Festival, which opens the area to local families to come out and play carnival games, including a maze-like in his orange where families can find their way along the lane rope through a giant puzzle and collect evidence on how they completed the maze. If you already looked for survivors, is a game that is as complex as one of the challenges that reward TV show.
As it turns out, The region has quite a few attractions Visalia related to agriculture for the visitors. It is a vibrant city with over 400,000 inhabitants in the area marketing. Many homes are in rural areas and, of course, farmlands and orchards stretch as far as the eye can see.
We stopped by Wiebe Farms in Reedley, where the direction of Richard Sawatzky family tradition that began with his father-in-law, Louise Wiebe, who launched the operation in 1956. The first crop of nectarines was produced in 1959 and today, this family business grows 500 acres of nectarines, peaches and plums, 50 varieties of fruit altogether. Buses bring tourists by a special barn where they showed a video produced by professionals describing the history Wiebe Farms, then take on a trailer platform open to see the trees and learn more on fruit production.
A large part of the tour Wiebe Farms is now a tasting of olive oil. Wiebe recently bought the rights to produce Bari olive oil and they put aside the land now grow olives. But before you just drop by Wiebe Farms, be sure and call (559-638-6861) that visits are not available every day.
A ruling in the general area has been Luke Almond Acres where Ed Esajian manages a store that sells that product Country almonds, and a wide variety of fruits and derived products. Esajian has also been known to take a few minutes to talk to visitors about how almonds are produced. Our advice: Fill up with almonds coated with chocolate.
A good place to stop is Bravo Farms Cheese – you can not miss along Highway 99 in the Travers. Place is packed with visitors who find a treasure of gifts and food and can watch cheeses. We spent a few minutes with the owner Jonathan Van Ryn, who took us down the cheese in the cellar where there is a refrigerated room filled with shelves filled with blocks of cheese are and aging. Bravo Farms is now breaking the Costco where you can buy their winning Silver Mountain Cheddar cheese cloth bound.
You can not miss Bravo Farms that your journey along the highway – it began in the '50s as a fruit stand at the roadside and now Van Ryn entered and expanded its activities to include a gift shop, Burger Joint, ice cream shop and convenience store. Bravo cheese was actually produced since the 70s by a local dairy farm, but the current cheese factory was built as a partnership between Van Ryn and the original owner Bravo.
It all goes to show that there is more than meets the eye when you perform the tedious up and down the San Joaquin Valley. Next time, take a quick detour where agriculture Visalia California produces more than fruits and vegetables.
